I have found out a little on the history of this grape. I apologise if you all know it already but it is fairly impressive and all the other good grapes can be teraced back to their origin (European).
I am informed that it was originally an Italian grape that was transplanted to Cal and took to the conditions there. The original grape was wiped out by a disease (fungus, bacteria, insect?) and the only remaining vines were those in Cal. This almost makes it an American grape! There must be a god ((Bacchus/Dionysius?) who looks after wine drinkers)!
