Small Boat for Kids to Build...

Nick,

During 7th & 8th grade a friend and I purchased a Pram Kit from Chris Craft. We took it to our school shop class and for 2 school years we built this boat with the help of our shop teacher. It turned out great! We put a 10hp Johnson Sea Horse OB on the stern and scared ourselves silly running up and down the bay fishing, digging sandworms to do more fishing, and hitting the clam beds from time to time to bring home a mess of the tasty bi-valves.

Check out the Small Boat Adventures page, open the “26th Annual Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival 2002” scroll to page #2 and look at the 9’9” X 4’ Lake Union Bay Skiff designed by Brad Rice. Here is a plywood Tape & Seam constructed row & sailing skiff that has been reduced to the least amount of panels and time to build a very sweet looking lightweight fun boat – to construct as well as use! Contact the Center for Wooden Boats and ask if the plans are available. This small boat would be easier to put together than the old Chris Craft Pram Kit we built as there are no chine logs to shape, no deck to build and fit, or tricky gunnel parts. If you loft and pre-cut the more difficult panels the boat will go together in a semester -- with maybe a Saturday or two to stay on track.

As this boat has been built many times the bugs are worked out and the ‘go together’ is fast enough it keep even young builders interested and motivated to complete the next step.

Anybody else have an idea here?
