Re: Geodesic AiroLITE boats

12.230.8.5

A little feedback on Geodesic Aerolite boats. I built a Snowshoe 14 designed by Platt Monfort several years ago. These boats are designed like fabric covered wood aircraft. The boats are very light. The craft has a very lively motion, no matter what the hull shape. They make an excellent craft for small still waters; One person can easily portage the boat for quite some distance.

I would strongly recommend the boats for use on any small lake or pond. If you intend to use the boat in a river, it would be OK if used in the lower reaches of a large river that is deep and broad and slow moving. I think that any river beyond a class 1 (Easy-Small waves, clear passages) would be too much for this boat especially if it is loaded.

When you build a Monfort designed Geodesic Aerolite, follow the plans to the letter. They are very clear and well thought out. The wood type and scantlings work well. Make certain that you use oak as specified for the frames. The oak is very strong and easy to bend and form to fit well. The fabric, dope and Kevlar are all readily available from a great company called Aircraft Spruce and Specialty (you can find them on the Internet). Good Luck and Good Boating!
