Re: general use film suggestions?

Casual color negative film - try Kodak 800.
You can push it to 1600 with acceptable results.

B&W - I'd go with the Ilford films, like 400. You can push it to 1600 even. Their 50 film is sweet.
Kodak t-max 3200 is pretty good for the dark shots. Grain looks good on b&w, as we've seen from RB's oevre.
