The unsafe aspect they are talking about is the trigger voltage that appears on the center contact of the hot shoe. Some older models had very high voltages. Get a high input impedance digital multimeter, and on the DC range, measure the voltage from the center pin on the flash foot to the ground contact on the foot. If it's 10V or less there should be no problem.
