Yashica electro light meter question

I just got one of these. can't believe how hard the meter is to operate- so am presuming that it faulty. To press it down is quite hard, and it won't stay down (should it?). It is very hard to see the little red arrows some times. At other times, the meter doesn't seemto work at all- sounds like poor contact, worn out switch etc. Or is this normal for an electro
I like the ML lenses, but don't like the design of this meter much- could anyone recommend a similarly priced camera, pref Yashica, with a more user friendly meter, per semi automatic. Are the semi auto Yashicas easier to operate? and do they take the same screw mount lenses?
