Photo CD software

I just bought a Canon G5, my first digital camera. I'm wondering what the current thinking is as to the best software. I did check the archives but most of the info is from 2001 so I thought a new post might be warranted. For now I'm using Windows 98se with a Plextor CD-R and Roxio PhotoSuite 5 that came with the Plextor. I am also getting a copy of Photoshop 6 that a friend is giving me. Is there any other software I should get or at least look into? I will probably end up with a library of hundreds of images.
I'm shooting mostly for my business website and my friend who designed the site and is hosting said to shoot in the large/least compression JPEG mode (not RAW) and send the images to him in that form. He will do all other processing for the site. I might, however, want to tweak some images in Photoshop for my own uses/amusement or ????.
