Re: Sony DSC V-1 vs Canon S50......any thoughts? {nt}

Excellent comparison...thanks. In the meantime, after I did a fair amount of poking around on the web, I went with the Sony. I liked to 4x optical lens, the AF assist and the "night shot" feature (that lets you take pictures in total darkness). I've shot on full auto and haven't gotten the bluinsh cast, but I mostly shoot in P mode where I adjust white balance manually. It's really simple....just hold up a piece of white paper in front of the camera and push a button....voila, you're done. I have to say, the battery life is not great and a 2nd battery is mandatory. I got a very good deal on the camera...$385. A second battery and quick recharger set me back $100 and a 256 mb memory stick pro was another $129. They even threw in a free camera bag. I got it from a place called www.bilibi.com. Everything arrived in perfect order in 2 days. So far I'm very happy.
You are right about the "pocketability" issue. Though small, it's kind of deep front to back and putting it in a pocket is not a likely option. It does have a built in lens cover that closes over the lens when it powers down, a welcome feature. pictures are razor sharp and the movie feature is great. I have it set so I can record short 5 second comments with each picture I shoot....a cool feature that helps you keep "mental notes" about a shot. Like I said....so far so good. One non-specific observation, the overall feal and look of the camera is 1st rate and all buttons and switches have a reassuringly solid feel to them.
