I have servers on all the time along with a bunch of computers that the kids don't turn off. You should make sure you're usng passwords to login and that you don't have any shares set up that don't have passwords. Most attackers will go after open shares. Also, use good passwords. 'password' isn't good. It's best to use some numbers and a capital letter or two. Something like '2Gr8t', easy to remember and hard to guess. Longer is better too.Do you have other computers on a network or just one connected to a cable modem?
If you have a network, it then should be on a private IP group. This is a great, cheap security trick. The router connects to your cable modem and then translates the internal IPs to something in a private range, 192.1.168.x or 192.0.168.x or 10.10.10.x, or whatever. I forget the exact numbers, but most all are set up this way by default. Why this is good is that no one can route to you with these numbers. You can have all your PCs sharing one cable modem access via the router and all are fairly secure.
