Please help with Windows 98 limited screen resolution

I had to reinstall Windows 98SE on my laptop and now can get only 640X480 screen resolution (and only 16 colors). I tried the usual things without luck. Neither did I have success searching the Microsoft self-help area of their web-site.
Graphics adapter- "Stndard PCI graphics adapter (VGA)"
Monitor- "Generic Television"
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
