New Laptop MAc or PC??

Im in the market for a new laptop and there are so many choices its almost impossible to make a descision. My price range is about $1200 or so. I am quite busy with work and school so I would like something portable that I can bring on the bus/subway with me, but it will also double as my home computer I have a 19in screen i can plug it into for home use so screen size isnt important. It will be used mainly to surf the net, word processing, and for music.
Ok so you guys know what my needs are. Now the question is, do I go with MAC or PC?? Almost everyone I know has reccomended the 12in Macs. What do u all think???
