Is It Necessary to Buy OEM Ink Cartridge Replacements?

The difference between the price of OEM ink cartridges and "compatible" ink cartridges is about 80%!! I recently bought and Epson Stylus Photo R300. The Epson replacements are about $17 while the "compatible" ones are about $4. The place I bought the printer from tells me that non-OEM can screw up the printer and make the warranty void. Is this just hype or should I stick with the Epson brand ink? Any other reasons I might want to consider?
