System 9 works.
X runs on G3s and G4s only. Recommend at least 160 MB RAM. From what I hear, some of the early G3s may have limitations in specific areas. You'll have to scour the apple site to find what they say on that. It might just be "all G3s supported". No doubt if its a G3 then X will install and run.
