HP changed to Chinese manufacture from Taiwanese a year or so ago. My impression is that the quality is up and the prices are down. I'm impressed with ones I've gotten since then. IBM has been selling Chinese built PCs and laptops for a while. They just sold the whole division to Lenovo, the Chinese company. Quality should stay the same, support policies are being worked out.
If you can wait a bit, check costo.com and see if they are putting together any group buys. Sometimes you have to look and see that delivery is in 6 weeks to tell this. A year ago I got an HP ze5200 with 2.4G P4/512MB, DVD player, 15 inch active screen under $1200 delivered. That is about what the single unit quick delivery price is today.
