...six of us tasted 6 pinot noirs from CA and OR.

Low points is the favorite.

6. 2011 Youngberg Hill Jordan (OR) $50 - 33pts - 4 lasts - light without much fruit, slightly astringent minerally finish

5. 2015 Reynolds Russian River Valley $48 - 25pts - 1 first, 2 lasts - ok but not distinctive

4. 2015 Siduri Yamhill-Carlton (OR) $30 - 24pts - ok but a little warm so it didn't taste well

3. 2016 Henderson Trail (OR) $34 - 16pts - 2 firsts (my 2nd) - smooth, flavorful

2. 2012 Willakenzie Keana (OR) $39 - 14pts - nice cherry fruit, slightly minerally finish

1. 2015 J Vineyards Russian River Valley $31 - 13pts - 2 firsts (my first) - soft, balanced, velvety, little bigger wine

All of these started out tasting similar and were pretty good but over the hour or so some changed a little for the worse. One taster identified the 2 CA pinots finding them more fruit forward and less minerally.

Look at the point drop for the top 3. The J Vineyards should be easy to find and is highly recommended for the price.

I agree with your tasting partner as a general rule....Ca pinots tend to be more fruit forward in comparison to Or (not always of course).
Oregon Pinots are also way more variable by vintage. The climate is just on the edge of being warm enough ... Its not a stretch to say a 2016 could be vastly different from 2015....from the same producer.
Sadly prices for OR Pinot have escalated to the point where $31 is kind of a bargain.

...8 years ago when we tasted in the Willamette Valley, I was shocked that Archery Summit had a $100 pinot.

Now they are commonplace.
