for the summer. Not really staying in any amazing wine regions (trying to stay away from tourists) and I can't even tell you what varietals are grown where I'll be.
Its a holiday... so no winery tours. But I'll find some good stuff and report back.
I imagine there will be many negronis consumed poolside.

Florence, Tuscany, and Umbria. Airbnbing it for 4 weeks.

Our first time, so give me your traveler's thoughts while you're there.

...have friends who just returned from Puglia.

It's hard to get bad wine anywhere in Italy, France or Spain.

Unlike here.

I much prefer the wine of Piedmont over Tuscany. Sangiovese isn't my favorite grape. What I do like of it is usually at the higher end and I'm told Brunello's are a lot cheaper over there.

Doubt we'll be doing a lot of winery tours. Mostly just relaxed sight seeing.

As far as bad wines here, you should give Old Ghost a try!

You say that, actually everyone says that. But last year on the Amalfi Coast I ordered a glass of some house wine and it wasn't good. I even had a bad meal...that was maybe the first ever for me in Italy. And we were the only tourists in the place.

...a few years ago and had dinner at a restaurant he really liked. He ordered the house wine and thought it was very good.

They went back and ate there again late in the evening and he got the house wine again but it wasn't as good.

He looked around as the restaurant was getting ready to close and saw the waiters pouring any wine left from the bottles on the table into a vat marked "house wine".

It's always an adventure.

I'm not going to any of those places so I won't be much help I'm afraid. I did, years ago go to a place called LaChuisa and it was memorable evening. At the time, it was the most I had ever spent on a meal but I remember having no regrets. Its sort of out in the middle of nowhere.

Fall is a great time to go.

Back in the day, I worked at a wine store that did wine tasting dinners at some of Houston's top restaurants. After a particularly fancy one we helped cleaned up by pouring the left over glasses into a wine bucket. We, the employees, were pretty toasted afterward. One of the guys offered to down a glass on a bet. He was extra toasty.
