I'm home along, playing hookey from work, the final grades are in and the profs will play. I was about to cut the lawn and do the grocery shopping, but first I thought I'd play on the internet. I find myself at the Audio Review site, then at Audio Asylum and now here. Now I still have to cut the lawn and do the grocery shopping and now feel compelled to stock up on fine wine too. I'm simply delighted to discover the Asylums. Soon I'll be off checking out the other asylums too.

For a rich, hearty red, try Rosemont Estates 1998 Cabernet Shirez--I hope I got this right.

I've found one bottle here of '98 labelled Rosemont Estates Cabernet. It was good. It was demolished, I must say, with some astonishing enthusism by the neighbors (You can be sure I helped!) at a backyard steak-and-stuff party that just sorta happened a couple of weeks ago Saturday when the weather was good and all the kids wanted fed. (First they ate hotdogs, then the adults gravitated in, we raided several freezers including ours, and then the adults ate. The kids lost out on this one :-)

But the Rosemont Estates Cabernet (Aussie wine, btw), was very very good.

I don't remember if it was a Shiraz blend, I found it at the store in the "try this one" listings (we have a really good store out here for that), and tried it.

Now to see if they have a case hanging out.

And also to find an excuse to do in that, um, 7? Calem Porto hidden in the back of the closet under a blanket. (GRIN)

There seem to a quorum of wine guzzling, audio obsessive academics. God help us - how can we find time to teach, give tutorials, oversee theses and projects?
PS Do your grades go up or down after the third glass of wine? I've had to stop marking before I start putting the truth down eg "Not bad for a student with little brain power and ability" & "this student barely achieved a fail - but as he cannot pay attention for more than five minutes to anything more taxing than "The Simpsons" this is hardly surprising" & " if we ever succeed in modelling intelligence X has proved in this module (AI) a need to be in receipt ...". This is when an hour or so of Coltrane is needed (and a few more glasses).
PPS Try Nottage Hill, Oxford Landing most penfold Ozzie wines.

There's both a Shiraz/Cab blend, and a Cab in the Rosemont Estates.

The one we had here was the Cab, but I went back, and got a half-case of each. Both are entirely yummy.

Yes, the Rosemont is very nice and an exceptional value. Australia is deliverying great values lately. The country has an increasing amount of great wine makers, has learned to grow grapes (far from always as great as some french wine regions) and some wineries there seem to be comitted to make "very nice" wines (many use french oak that is just right for the variety, replace their oak when needed, etc).

You want another example of a "great value" of Australian wines?? Try Wolf Blass 1998 Shiraz (69%) Cabarnet Sauvignon (31%) - Red Label. Wolf Blass does a wonderful job also on their 100% varietals (look for their yellow labels for a step up too).

Australia may be the next frontier when it comes to hearty reds (Cabs, etc) now that Chile is no longer offering the super bargains, at least not as frequently as yester-year.

Sure, by shopping and tasting, you will great values in powerful reads like the above, from a number of places. Argentina, Spain and Italy offer some exceptional values for the money too. Discovering them is half the fun.
