Do Halogen headlight bulbs diminish in brightness?

A couple of weeks ago, I almost turned into the wrong lane at an intersection. My wife was concerned that the family trait of cataracts had come home to roost in my eyes. I proclaimed that it might just be that the headlight bulbs, approximately six years old, were worn out and dim. A few days later, I went to the local WalMart, purchased a pair of GE Hawkeye replacement bulbs and promptly installed them. They do seem to perform much better. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Or am I guilty of the futility of trying to hold back the onslaught of middle age?
