Not his most well-known novel; that honor belongs to either "Winter's Tale" or "A Soldier of the Great War", both extremely worth reading. The first chapter of "Refiner's Fire deals with the voyage of the Lindos Transit, a freighter loaded with desperate Jews from the wreck of Europe after the war, and it's beaching on the shores of what was to become Israel. It would make a great movie, far better than, say, "Exodus." The role of the British in this incident is shameful beyond conception. Regards, J.R. |
