I just bought a used 2000 Mercury 8 hp two stroke outboard. The motor looks brand new. It however has a problem. At about 1/4 throttle to 1/2 throttle it will backfire and blow a puff of smoke. It trolls just fine and once you crack it over 1/2 throttle it goes great. Just at the lower rpms. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I replaced the spark plugs to no avail. Thanks Warlo

Try the basic fixes - Carbarator spray, get a 55 gallon barrel and set up the motor to run - adjust the needle (air fuel mixture). The backfiring is caused by gas not burning in the cylinder and then firing in the exhaust instead. Use gas stableizer all the time - this will help with the tarish from building up. Sometimes just running the motors often will help remove buildup. Good luck.
