dumb question.. what does the SS stand for in boat names?

Well, if you are referring to ships, it means "Special Service". In the old days it meant "Steam Ship." And in names starting with U.S.S., it means "United States Service".But if you are talking about small boat brand names, Thom's guess sounds good. It also stands for "stainless steel" when talking about fittings and sailboat rigging.
'Super Sport'...??? Like GM branded certian vehicles in the 60's & 70's?
