Amazon.com and BN.com are probably some of the better online resources in that regard, but they'll only be guranteed to have books currently in print (some out of print stuff turns up - but it's far from complete). Unfortunately an author search will list hardback, paperback and even audio versions of books that makes figuring out a chronology pretty difficult or impossible.
I'd like to find a resource that simply lists authors, their books published, dates, and maybe the publisher.
